A new play.

The Curve

The Curve is a new play that I was asked to write by The Gaiety and The South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership. I worked with a group of volunteers once a week for 15 weeks, getting to know them and their thoughts on ageing well in Ayrshire.

We met each week in Ayr town centre and the group spoke a lot about the run down nature of the town and how they felt about it. One of the documents we looked at quite a bit was the life curve, a measurement of a persons capability to live independently. The idea of the life curve is to use active intervention and slow the curve of ageing. We decided to make a life curve of Ayr and it didn’t look good. So we created a play about a group of pensioners in Ayr taking on the high street to improve their lives.

The play explores the friendship between Nelly, Alec and Cal and the lengths they go to to turn around the town they love.

Synopsis

Nelly is visited by a healthcare worker who introduces her to the Life Curve and informs her that she is already on it. Nelly realises that if she’s on the beginning of the Life Curve, Ayr must be dropping off the end.

In order to get herself active and off the curve she enlists a group of volunteers to set about turning the town around and if she has to commit a crime or two to do it, so be it.
